Post-punk and new wave music purveyors, The Psychedelic Furs, made their debut on the U.S. dance chart in 1979. Their first-ever single, “We Love You,” peaked at number 77. The following year, their follow-up single, “Sister Europe,” made its entry into international territories, such as Australia and New Zealand. These releases are spawned by the band’s debut self-titled debut album, which made its appearance on both the U.K. and U.S. charts. Led by the illustrious Richard and Tim Butler, the six-member group emerged in the late ‘70s from London, England.
They steadily maintained commercial success across the world throughout the ‘80s. In 1981, the band came out with one of their biggest staples, “Pretty in Pink.” The single peaked at number 43 on the U.K. chart. A popular 1986 American film was named after the song and the band later re-recorded a new version just for the soundtrack. During an interview, Richard Butler mentioned that the song was inspired by two women he knew in London – one was his girlfriend, and the other, a girl he met in a pub. The song is featured in the band’s sophomore effort, Talk Talk Talk, which became their career-defining album. The Furs released several more commercially successful efforts for the rest of the decade, most of which entered the U.K. chart’s Top 20. Their 1982 and 1984 albums, Forever Now and Mirror Moves, sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S., each earning a gold certification.
English rock outfit Squeeze was founded in the mid-'70s by original members Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook. The band began entering the U.K. chart in 1979 upon releasing their sophomore effort, Cool for Cats. The record spawned several hit singles, “Goodbye Girl,” “Up the Junction,” and the celebrated titled track. Critics praised the album for its “hard-edged power pop” sound and “herky-jerky rhythms.”
In 1981, Squeeze released their most iconic album, East Side Story. The album featured their biggest hit single on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, “Tempted.” The song peaked at number 8, making it their highest-charting single on the U.S. chart. Meanwhile, the album spawned “Labelled with Love,” which reached number 4 on the U.S. chart. The song is the band’s second highest-charting single after “Cool for Cats” and “Up the Junction,” which peaked at number 2 in the U.K.
